Hoiberg embraces (and likely enjoys) the chore of fitting his pieces together

Fred Hoiberg, the former NBA executive, sure sounded like a personnel director Thursday at the Iowa State media day.

Also a numbers guy, Hoiberg rattled off a slew of statistics for the players from last year’s 23-win team that he must replace.

“Losing over 52 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists a game and 278 of our 346 three’s,” Hoiberg said as background for what he and his staff face. “There are a lot of new faces that need to come in a make a contribution.”

Hoiberg confirmed that figuring out the combinations is a work-in-progress. But, he likes the pool of candidates for playing time.

“I think we’ll be a deep team,” Hoiberg said. “I’m comfortable putting anyone on our roster in the game right now.”

When pressed to play his hand in regards to whom might play what position, Hoiberg skipped specifics.

“I’m a little reluctant to call guys your typical 1-through-5 positions,” he said. “I like basketball players. I like versatile players.”

This team, like his previous ones, has a number of multiple-position players and he is in no hurry to define roles.

“We’re still trying to figure out roles,” Hoiberg said. “It’s up to me to mesh it together in a way that helps us win basketball games.”

The personnel man is in his element.
