Two plotlines to follow for Kane on Monday

There will be two storylines to follow today regarding Iowa State’s DeAndre Kane. One looks forward and the other backwards.

Looking ahead is this evening’s game with Kansas in Hilton Coliseum. Kane’s availability is up in the air after suffering a significant ankle sprain with 22 seconds left in Saturday’s game at Oklahoma.

Kane, who has displayed a noteworthy toughness all season, was carried off the court in Norman. He’s thoroughly rehabilitated the injury since returning to Ames, but his playing status / effectiveness for tonight is in question.

The other plot revolves around Kane’s potential to earn the Big 12’s Player-of-the-Week honor for the third straight time.

Only two conference players ever have accomplished that feat: Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin (2008-09) and Texas Tech’s Andre Emmett (2003-04).

Kane won the most-recent two honors. His candidacy for the third included a 30-point, 8-rebound, 9-assist, 5-steal performance against 7th-ranked Baylor and a 23-point, 9-rebound, 4-assist effort at Oklahoma.

In his 2 games last week, Kane shot 62.5% from the field, 55.6% from three-point range and averaged 26.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3 steals.

The Big 12 will name its POW honoree Monday morning. It would be cool if Kane faced Kansas on national TV tonight as the 3-time defending award winner.

Actually, I just hope he gets the chance to play against the Jayhawks and is healthy enough to showcase some of his amazing abilities.
