Round seven of the Hy Vee Cy-Hawk Series starts this week as the Cyclones make a couple of visits to Iowa City.
Iowa State’s 11th-ranked volleyball team opens Cy-Hawk Series play Friday with a 7 p.m. match against Iowa. The football teams from ISU and UI then kickoff Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The winning school in the series has alternated every year and it’s not surprising why.
The schedule is very unbalanced, so one of the campuses (this year it’s Iowa) gets to host the majority of the events. Iowa won the first competition in 2005 and added championships in 2007 and 2009. The Cyclones have won in even-numbered years (2006, 2008 and 2010).
This year’s schedule features eight events in Iowa City, two in Ames and the women’s and men’s cross country district championships at a neutral site.
It will be interesting to see if this is the year that Iowa State can break through and capture the series in back-to-back seasons. No school has ever done that. The winning team in each event contributes two points to the team total. The lone exception is football, which counts for three points.
While much of the focus is on the football game between the state rivals each season, it’s only one of the showcase events in the Cy-Hawk Series. You can follow the up-to-date standings all season on cyclones.com.
