Jackson doing lots of teaching with his team

Kevin Jackson’s second Iowa State wrestling team faces one of the nation’s toughest schedules and it will do so with a lineup featuring many new names.

The Cyclones will compete against six of the nation’s Top 10 schools from last year’s national tournament and host seven home duals (after hosting only four a year ago), including the Big 12 Championship.

Jackson welcomes the challenge and attacks it with his standard enthusiasm.

He told his media day gathering that “it’s a re-loading year and we’re the type of program that aspires to be in the hunt every year.”

Jackson did acknowledge that it’s tough to know exactly what he has until real competition begins. Three of his athletes are nationally ranked (Chris Drouin, 141; Jon Reader, 174; and Jerome Ward, 197) and the other weights are largely open competitions.

“With so many new faces, it has been a big-time teaching period for us,” Jackson said.

But, when you’re a “supreme optimist” as Jackson called himself, nothing is out of reach.
