VB starts tourney run tonight & Baker at Q-school

Dot-dot-dot on Iowa State Athletics:

Iowa State is ranked 22nd in the first Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings of the year. The Cyclone women’s cross country team scored 66 points with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. A year ago, the Cyclones finished an all-time best 34th in this national all-sports competition.

The ISU volleyball team opens play tonight in its national championship. The Cyclones, who earned an invite for the fifth consecutive year, face Creighton in Minneapolis. Meaghan Hayden of the Athletics Communications Office will be blogging live from the match on cyclones.com, which will also have a free video feed of the match, courtesy of the University of Minnesota.

With its eighth-place finish in the NCAA Women’s Cross Championship, Iowa State has recorded Top 10 national finishes in its last three competitions for the women’s track & field team. The women’s track team ended last season with a 10th-place performance indoors and an 8th-place effort outdoors. Bill Bergan’s powerhouse men’s track & field and cross country program at Iowa State last accomplished that trifecta in the mid-1980s.

Former Cyclone men’s golfer Chris Baker is playing in the final stage of the PGA TOUR’s qualifying school. After shooting 75-75 in the opening two rounds, Baker is tied for 147th (with tour veterans Skip Kendall and Joe Ogilvie among others). The Golf Channel will provide TV coverage of the final rounds over the weekend.
