Front line to face big test at Baylor

The Iowa State women’s basketball team’s last loss was at Iowa on Dec. 9 in a match-up of nationally ranked programs.

"We got our butts kicked in the post," Coach Bill Fennelly said after the game. "Kelsey (Bolte) and Lauren (Mansfield) gave us every ounce of energy they had, but I can’t say that about anyone else."

You don’t have to read much between the lines to realize that Fennelly was challenging his front line to grow up after the foursome of Chelsea Poppens, Hallie Christofferson, Anna Prins and Amanda Zimmerman combined for only 11 points and 11 rebounds in Iowa City.

In the six games since, the Cyclones have produced at least two double figure scorers in the front line five times. The exception was against Florida A&M when Christofferson scored 10, Zimmerman nine, Prins eight and Poppens eight.

Next up for the Cyclones and their developing frontcourt is top-ranked Baylor and its national player of the year candidate, 6-8 Brittney Griner.

"Competitive people want that (playing Griner and the No. 1-ranked Bears) challenge," Fennelly said. "We are playing the best team in the country, on their court and on national TV."

That will be quite the mid-term exam for a young frontline that continues to improve.
