The Iowa State football team will be starting spring practice soon and there is an open race for someone to become the starting quarterback.

After three years with Austen Arnaud behind center, the vacancy sign is out. The list of candidates is long and currently headed by junior Jerome Tiller, a two-game starter in his career.

The man, who will ultimately, make the decision on who plays will be third-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Herman.

According to Rivals.com, the Cyclones couldn’t have a better man making the call. College football writer Tom Dienhart created his list of the top coaches – by position – in each Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conference.

Herman was tabbed the Big 12’s best QB coach.

The write-up on Herman said: "One of the sport’s rising stars, Herman doubles as the Cyclones’ coordinator. Herman, 35, was coordinator at Rice before moving to Ames, and his attack broke almost 50 school records during his tenure in Houston. He’s a patient teacher who excels at coaching the fundamentals and devising a scheme to accentuate his quarterback’s skills."

We are six months and a day from the season opener against UNI. That’s plenty of time for the league’s quarterback guru to identify and train the best candidate.
