Johnson-Lynch schedules tough; team answers

Some coaches schedule their way to success. And, then there is Christy Johnson-Lynch’s approach.

“All summer I kept looking at the schedule wondering what I had done,” Johnson-Lynch said about last week’s slate. “There is an art to scheduling and sometimes you get it right and sometimes you miss the mark a little bit.”

Last week, the Cyclones hosted a tournament and defeated Southern Mississippi and Arizona State to win the title. A day later Iowa State hosted its in-state rival Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

After sweeping the Hawkeyes, Johnson-Lynch and her team boarded a plane on Sunday, flew to Gainesville, Fla., and faced the nation’s ninth-ranked team on their home court. A five-set triumph over the Gators was Iowa State’s second-ever road win over a Top 10 team on the road (ISU beat No. 5 Nebraska in 2009).

Johnson-Lynch admitted the hard schedule would be excellent preparation for the Big 12 season. She also confirmed it was somewhat of a gamble.

“This is risk in scheduling this tough,” she said before play started. “But, I think we have the group to handle it.”

The 7-0 start to the season would certainly back up that last statement.
