KU win last year serves as the blueprint

Paul Rhoads feels last year’s 28-16 win over Kansas was one of the best victories in his tenure. The Jayhawks won only three games, but Rhoads cherished the win because it came the week after ISU won for the first time ever at Texas.

The mental preparation after a big victory was the topic of conversation at Monday’s news conference after the Cyclones’ 44-41 triple overtime victory over Iowa.

“The positive is that we can cite specific examples where we have (put a prior game behind us),” Rhoads said of this week’s prep work. “We’ve got to understand what we did that week (vs. Kansas) to move on and focus.”

In that Kansas game, the Cyclones trailed 9-7 at halftime and lagged the Jayhawks in time of possession by 13 minutes in the first half.

“We did struggle,” Rhoads said, “but we found a way to come back and execute to win a football game.”

Although most observers would not count that home win over the Jayhawks as a major step forward, Rhoads liked the way his club responded to its prior week success.

He’ll try to share some of the lessons learned as UConn, which is coming off a Fiesta Bowl season, looms.
