Every game is “must win” per Rhoads

Paul Rhoads wrestles with the term “must win game.”

“They are all must win games,” Rhoads said of his team’s 12-game regular season schedule. “You’ve got to get to six to play in the post-season and every single one of them counts in that regard.”

Many of the players were peppered with the “is this a must win game” at Monday’s news conference. The players agreed with Rhoads’ script.

“If you establish a single game as that (must win), you can really be in trouble if you end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard,” Rhoads said. “Win or lose, there is a lot of football left to be played.”

The Cyclones are halfway to the goal of becoming bowl eligible and preparation this week has been focused.

“Sometimes, it’s easier to coach a football team after a loss than it is after a victory because of their intent,” Rhoads said. “That is true of our football team. They see the improvement they are making, but they also know they need to do things better to win in the Big 12.”

Is it a must win Saturday? That can’t be answered with any certainty. It would be the fourth win and another step closer to the season goal.
