Pursuit of bowl eligibility & 50k go hand-in-hand

At the same time Paul Rhoads’ football team has been methodically marching toward bowl eligibility, Cyclone fans have been pouring into Jack Trice Stadium in record numbers.

The Iowa State football team needs two more wins to be eligible for bowl consideration. The Iowa State fan base could set a record if at least 50,000 fans show up for Saturday’s game against Kansas (temperatures in Ames predicted for high 50s for the 11:30 a.m. kickoff).

The Cyclones are aiming for their fifth consecutive crowd of better than 50k this weekend. ISU had four such crowds in 1981 and 1982 and – in combination with this season – that is the school record.

Rhoads, his team and the athletics department have appreciated that support greatly. Saturday’s game is being touted as “Fan Celebration Day”.

A parade of prizes throughout the game, discount for the popular Walking Taco, ticket promotions, a commemorative poster (as supplies last) and more are planned for Saturday. If you want to review details of the promotion, click here.

The pursuit of six wins and another crowd of 50,000 go hand-in-hand.

“We’ll need a boost from our fans the rest of the season,” Rhoads said. “They’ve been a real factor all year and we are counting on them again.”
