These Big 12 QBs not flashy, just winners

Nine college quarterbacks are averaging more than 300 yards passing per game this season and four – Brandon Weeden (OSU), Landry Jones (OU), Robert Griffin III (BU) and Seth Doege (TT) – are from the Big 12.

Among the Top 15 players nationally in total offense, six – the four listed above plus Ryan Tannehill (A&M) and James Franklin (MIZ) – are Big 12 quarterbacks.

One of the names missing from both lists is K-State’s Collin Klein. He is being given much of the credit – and rightly so – for the Wildcats’ 9-2 record. Klein has accounted for 36 of the team’s 47 touchdowns this season.

“His productivity is as good as anybody in this league,” Coach Paul Rhoads said Monday. “He’s a special (wild)cat, a really good football player and a tough kid.”

In Big 12 games only, Klein ranks fourth in the conference in rushing (87.9 ypg) and eighth in passing (156.5 ypg). Although those are not flashy numbers compared to the staggering totals of the players mentioned earlier, Klein has been the foundation for K-State’s season.

Quietly, Iowa State’s Jared Barnett is compiling similar numbers. Barnett (through six league games) has averaged 68.2 yards rushing and 170.8 yards passing per game. His total offense average is 5.4 yards lower than Klein.

Neither Klein nor Barnett needs to put up gaudy numbers for a win. Each has been successful doing it their way all year. This duo may not gain major headlines, but they both win games. That’s what matters.
