Cyclones & Rhoads get creative with contract extension

The courtship – or, more appropriately, a renewal of vows – began the week of Oct. 17.

The Cyclone football team had lost a 52-17 decision at Missouri to even its record at 3-3. Some followers of the program wondered what had happened to the team’s promising 3-0 start.

Meanwhile, Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard and then-President Dr. Gregory Geoffroy began discussing a contract extension for Coach Paul Rhoads.

Rhoads’ team, of course, regained its traction and became bowl eligible with a dramatic overtime victory over second-ranked Oklahoma State.

For several weeks, Pollard, Geoffroy and Rhoads worked on the extension and reached the point where it was all but signed.

As the calendar turned from November to December, Rhoads’ name started appearing on “wish lists” for schools with coaching vacancies. The agreement with Rhoads, for practical purposes, really preceded that rumor mill.

The Ames Tribune’s Bobby LaGesse wrote an article last week about the extension and how both sides got creative to get it done. It’s an interesting read and you can access it here.
