Cyclones only BCS school in the nation with home wins over Top 5 teams in football and men’s basketball this year

Recently, a local talk radio host tried to spark a discussion to decide which home win – the football team’s overtime victory over second-ranked Oklahoma State or the Cyclones’ triumph over No. 5 Kansas in men’s basketball – was more significant.

What’s interesting is that Iowa State is the lone school in the nation that can have that debate. No one else has claimed wins, in front of its home fans, over Top 5 rated programs in both sports.

As a disclaimer, Oklahoma State did defeat fourth-ranked Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl and edged No. 2 Missouri in men’s basketball in Stillwater. Iowa State registered its signature wins in Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum.

LSU (football), Kentucky (men’s basketball), Kansas (men’s basketball), Indiana (men’s basketball) and Florida State (men’s basketball) all claim a pair of Top 5 victories, albeit in the same sport.

Cyclone fans, you don’t need to choose your favorite win. Just cherish the special memories you carry forward from a couple of huge moments in Iowa State history, especially if you got to witness the history in person.
