February is the month that will provide some answers to Fennelly

February means different things to different people. Perhaps, it’s that we’re on the downslope to spring. Maybe, it’s Valentine’s Day. Possibly, it’s the anticipation of March Madness if your team is still in the discussion.

“(We’ve made it to) February and we’re playing games that still matter,” Iowa State women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly said Monday. “This is when the special players and special teams find another gear.”

Midway through the Big 12 season, the Cyclones are packed in the logjam of schools chasing Baylor in the league standings.

“Our team could be anywhere from second to eighth in the conference,” Fennelly said. “Our team could be in a post-season tournament or not. Our team could do some really special things.”

Fennelly has spent the first 20 games learning about his team. He likes the senior leadership, has determined his seven-player rotation and gushes about how well the teams gets along with one another.

As much as he knows about his group, he’s soon to learn more.

“This is when you find out if you have that extra ‘thing’,” Fennelly said. “The teams and players that find ‘it’ survive this time of the year. Hopefully, we can be one of those teams.”
